the story of vispring

In 1899, the wife of British engineer James Marshall was taken ill in Canada. To alleviate her pains, James hand-crafted a supportive mattress using coiled springs wrapped in muslin. As it turned out, the new mattress was a revelation in comfort.

A New Mattress coming Ashore

The revolutionary mattress design landed in Britain two years later, in 1901, when it was brought to the European Continent by John Nolon and Frederick James. The pair decided to produce the mattress design commercially. That's when they incorporated the Marshall Sanitary Mattress Company. A few years later, the company was renamed Vispring.

An Ocean of Luxury

In 1911, ocean liners were the way to travel. It was because of those ships that Vispring mattresses found their first major orders. The bespoke comfort of a Vispring mattress fitted perfectly in the opulent cabins and suites of the world’s finest ships, such as the famous Titanic and the Olympic.

Made Naturally

As the years went by, Vispring’s expert bed makers started to experiment with new mattress fillings. They introduced more natural materials like horsehair, pure cotton, and Shetland wool, as well as luxury finishes like silk and cashmere. In 1932, Vispring also created the world’s first pocket-sprung divan – that is known as the ultimate sleeping experience.
