British luxury bed manufacturer Vispring is celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2026, tracing its origins to 1901 when founder James Marshall introduced the pocket spring mattress in London — an innovation born from a personal desire to ease his wife’s discomfort. Operating from its Plymouth, Devon factory with nearly 200 skilled craftspeople, the brand has maintained largely the same handcrafting techniques for over a century, including hand side stitching that can take up to eight hours per mattress and hand-nested springs sewn into individual calico pockets. Vispring fills its mattresses exclusively with natural materials such as British wool, cashmere, and horsehair, and sells to customers in 65 countries through nearly 1,000 stores worldwide. The brand has earned both the Queen’s and King’s Awards for Enterprise in International Trade (2012 and 2024) and has a storied heritage that includes outfitting the first-class cabins of the Titanic and supplying some of the world’s most prestigious hotels.
